Safety

Here are online safety resources the Newpapers in Education department has discovered. They are listed below – however, some sites may cover more than one area. If you know a site we don’t, feel free to contact us!
FEMA for Kids
Includes curriculum on becoming disaster ready, how to hurricane proof a house, lesson plans and a test on fire prevention and a “Masters of Disaters” quiz bowl. Also includes U.S. Department of Education’s emergency planning for schools and other information. The Web site also has nine fire fact sheets.
NetSmartz
This page is designed to help educators and administrators accumulate more information about Internet safety and technology, and take steps to bring their classrooms into the 21st century through interactive materials.
McGruff
McGruff, the world famous crime dog, is still around and giving advice on how to stop crime before it happens. Web site includes games on everything from bulling and cyberbullying to community clean-up.
Smokey the Bear
Learn about the history of Smokey the Bear’s fight to prevent wildfires. Web site has also developed a Smokey the Bear Teacher’s guide for K-5 educators and an activity book. Also, the Wildland Communicator’s Guide on the science and ecology of wildfires is published by the National Interagency Fire Center.
